Best Luxe Looks NYFW S/S 2016: Oscar de la Renta’s Matadors

In homage to the brand’s namesake, Peter Copping chose the red carnation as his inspiration for the Oscar de la Renta S/S16 RTW collection.

In an interview before the show, he noted that red carnations used to be thrown into the ring after a Spanish bullfight, and he wanted to incorporate this print in a “sort of Warhol way just to make the flowers feel a little bit more modern.”

He then dove further into the concept, inspired by the colors of wool embroidery on Spanish postcards as well as famous matador paintings like the pale blue satin worn by a matador, by Francisco Goya as well as the golden rod yellow and lilac in Francis Bacon’s “Study for Bullfight No. 2”.

The resulting collection was filled with Spanish Flamenco ruffles and tassels, lace, jacquards, pencil skirts and matador style jackets, and several stunning gowns in taffeta and silks, nodding to Oscar’s love for these materials while thinning out the underlayers, and designing a more casual neckline, lending Copping’s touch of a lighter, more laid back edit on the gowns. So gorgeous.
